Cosmetic Dentistry in North Phoenix - Composite Fillings

Cosmetic Dentistry
isn't just limited to teeth whitening. At Tatum Highlands Dentistry, we are proud to provide affordable composite fillings alongside our other cosmetic treatments that we regularly provide to Desert Ridge and the greater North Phoenix community.

What are Composite Fillings?

Cosmetic Fillings are contrasted with traditional silver (or amalgam) fillings, though both are the most widely used today. These fillings are commonly used to aesthetically treat a variety of dental problems such as chipped, cracked, decayed, or worn teeth.  Many people will generally receive fillings if they are being treated for cavities.

Unlike silver fillings, composite fillings are designed to look as close as possible to your natural regular teeth. Using the latest in dental technologies, Tatum Highlands Dentistry can seamlessly blend these fillings into your smile without drawing attention to them.

There are many types of filling materials available, each with their own advantages and disadvantages.  Dr. Dotson can happily go over and discuss the best options for restoring your teeth.

What are the Advantages of Composite Fillings?

Besides the aesthetic advantages, composite fillings also will remove less tooth structure in comparison to the traditional silver filling when treating tooth decay. Additionally, because they seek to replicate the natural look and feel of your teeth, Composite Fillings tend to be stronger than their traditional counterparts. For example, a tooth with a composite filling will be insulated and generally be more protected from extreme temperature changes. Composite Fillings also are an excellent safeguard to preventing breakage and damage.

While Composite Fillings do provide significant advantages, patients should be aware that they are not designed to be permanent and may someday need to be replaced. However, they are designed to be very durable and will last many many years, giving you a long-lasting, natural, and amazing smile!

How are Composite Fillings placed?

Composite Fillings are placed in layers and are often completed in one convenient visit. We begin by first numbing your tooth, allowing Dr. Dotson to remove the decay as needed. This space will then be thoroughly cleaned and carefully prepared before the new filling is placed. In cases where the tooth is near the nerve of the tooth, we will use a special medication for added protection.  The composite filling will then be precisely placed, shaped, and polished, restoring your tooth to its original shape and function.

Is there anything to expect after placement?

Patients will commonly report and experience some sensitivity to hot and cold when composite fillings are first placed; however, this will subside shortly after your tooth acclimates to the new filling. As far as anything else, we will provide you with some instructions at the conclusion of your treatment.  Ultimately, adhering to good oral hygiene practices, eating habits, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new fillings.
